Description
TEMT6000 Ambient Light Sensor Module – Analog Output
The TEMT6000 Ambient Light Sensor Module is a compact analog light-sensing module designed to measure the intensity of visible ambient light. It uses the Vishay TEMT6000 phototransistor, which has a spectral response adapted to the human eye and a peak sensitivity around 570 nm. This makes the sensor suitable for electronic systems that need to detect changes in surrounding illumination rather than simply detect the presence or absence of light.
Unlike digital light sensors that provide processed measurements through an I²C or similar interface, the TEMT6000 module provides a continuous analog voltage output. The output voltage changes according to the amount of light reaching the phototransistor, allowing a microcontroller or development board to read the signal through an ADC input. As the detected light intensity increases, the module's output voltage generally increases as well.
The module is based on a simple phototransistor and resistor voltage-divider circuit, making it easy to integrate into Arduino, ESP32, and other embedded electronics projects. Its analog output is particularly useful when the application requires a variable light-level signal that can be processed in software to control another circuit or device.
The TEMT6000 is primarily sensitive to the visible-light spectrum, with very low sensitivity to infrared compared with many general-purpose photodetectors. The sensor has a wide half-sensitivity angle of approximately ±60°, providing a broad response to ambient illumination reaching the sensing element.
Typical module implementations support 3.3V to 5.5V DC operation and provide an analog output suitable for common microcontroller ADC inputs. DFRobot specifies an illumination range of approximately 1–1000 lux for its TEMT6000 module, while the exact measurable range and voltage response depend on the module circuit, supply voltage, ADC resolution, and calibration.
The sensor can be used for automatic display brightness adjustment, smart lighting, daylight detection, robotics, energy-management systems, and other applications where real-time ambient-light feedback is required. Its simple analog interface also makes it useful for electronics education, prototyping, and embedded-system development.
